Tell us about yourself

How long have you been studying Arabic? What is your current level?

My name is Laura, I am French and grew up in the south of France. I graduated from McGill University in June 2019, where I did a bachelor degree at McGill University and followed a program in political science and Middle Eastern studies.
Today, I am pursuing a MSc in international relations of the Middle East with Arabic at the University of Edinburgh, for which I will graduate in 2021.

What made you decide to study the Arabic language and culture?  What & who inspired you?  What were your motivations

My career prospects being in intelligence and counterterrorism on the Middle East, I thought it was essential to learn Arabic. Being able to learn Arabic was a determinant to choose this degree, as a professional career concentrated on the Middle East can only be complete by speaking the language of the region. As I feel passionate about Middle Eastern culture, history, and politics, it also made sense to deepen my connection to the Middle East by learning its language. Knowing the language of the region one is studying, is not only essential to communicate, but also necessary to create links and relationships to the region, and to gather information on the area for academic or journalistic purposes, for instance
